Feeling Cold in Kalamazoo? Try Cellulose Insulation.

As we’ve covered in our most recent blog posts, the approaching winter in Kalamazoo is likely going to be bone-chillingly cold. While we’ve already discussed the merits of fiberglass insulation and spray foam insulation, we feel that it’s time to shine a light on another popular insulation choice: cellulose insulation.

Cellulose Insulation: What to Expect

Cellulose insulation is fantastic for attics and walls because of its exceptionally high R-value. For those who don’t know, an R-value is a measurement of how well a material can prevent the transfer of heat from one source to another. In insulation, then, higher R-value materials are coveted for their ability to keep homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Because cellulose insulation tends to have a higher R-value, it’s common practice to use it in the home. That being said, cellulose insulation is generally used more in attics and basements. This is because cellulose is most often applied as a blown in insulation, meaning it’s literally blown in through a tube, and can be something of a messy process. On top of that, blown in cellulose insulation isn’t great to breathe in over a long period of time, which is why it’s generally best applied to areas of the home that are only visited occasionally. While you should generally only experience a cough from the dust kicked up by cellulose insulation, it’s best to wear a mask and safety glasses if you plan on handling it or being around it for an extended period of time.
