Residential Insulation Tips You Can Use at Home
With fall leaving us soon and the winter fast approaching, it’s more important now than ever to make sure your residential insulation is up to snuff. That said, it’s important to keep in mind that insulation alone won’t keep your home warm in the winter if you’re not practicing some essential heat conserving strategies. After all, even top of the line insulation won’t help you much if you leave a window open in the bleak midwinter.
In this month’s blog post, we’re discussing some tips and tricks to keep your home heated during the winter.
Insulate Your Windows and Doors
Windows and doors are some of the most likely places for your home to leak heat. Even when properly secured, doors and windows still tend to have small openings where heat can escape and cold can enter. In order to prevent air exchange through these passages, we recommend taking a few simple steps:
Use Caulk to Seal Window Edges. Over time, the glass in your windows may lose its sealing properties as the wood warps due to time and temperature changes. To fix this, simply apply a caulk around the edges of the glass to form a new protective seal.
Install Weather Strips and Sweeps. Doors that lead outside are likely to have gaps around the edges. We recommend installing simple, affordable weather strips and sweeps to prevent air exchange.
Apply a Window Insulation Film. Perhaps the worst anti-insulation culprit in your home is the glass on your windows. Glass is a famously terrible insulator, so applying a thin window film can make a meaningful difference.
Taking simple steps such as these will not only keep you warm in the winter, but also save you some serious money in the long run.
Insulate Unfinished and Underused Spaces
If you have areas in your home that are either unfinished or underused, then doing a little at-home insulation can go a long way. Because these rooms aren’t used as much as your home’s other rooms, they may not get the same heating benefits.
Spend Some Time in These Spaces. Even if these rooms are insulated properly and have proper HVAC installed, they’re still missing one helpful heating component: you. Believe it or not, our bodies produce a pretty meaningful amount of heat around the home. We produce so much heat, in fact, that an essential consideration when installing HVAC is how many people can occupy the room. So, if you’d like to keep these rooms warm, simply spend some time there.
Rearrange Your Furniture. If you have furniture in these rooms, then double check to make sure they don’t obstruct a vent or radiator. If they do, then your HVAC system won’t be able to freely disperse heat throughout the room. Simply rearranging your furniture will mean that your heat won’t need to kick on as often or for as long.
